Schleswig-Holstein and Kherson: Scientific cooperation for the future!
In September 2023, the Solidarity Partnership between Schleswig-Holstein and Kherson Oblast in Ukraine was launched to promote cooperation in several areas, particularly in science. On October 13, 2023, a new university partnership was signed, which significantly deepens the existing relationships between the Christian Albrechts University of Kiel (CAU) and the Kherson State Agricultural and Economic University (KSAEU) in the field of economics. This cooperation will also extend to agricultural sciences, which are of great importance for the Kherson region. This is reported by the State government of Schleswig-Holstein.
Important personalities such as Prime Minister Daniel Günther, Agriculture Minister Werner Schwarz and the Consul General of Ukraine, Dr. Iryna Tybinka, involved. Professor Ralph Schneider and Professor Tim Diekötter from the CAU as well as Professor Viktoria Hranovska from the KSAEU underlined the relevance of this new partnership. Günther emphasized Schleswig-Holstein's support for Ukraine in times of crisis, while Schwarz emphasized the need for the connection between science and practice, especially with regard to agriculture and food security.
Research projects and scholarships
The university partnership is funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) with almost 800,000 euros until 2029. As part of this support, joint research and educational projects in agricultural, environmental and economic sciences are planned. Exchange programs and further training opportunities will also be part of the cooperation. The delegation from Kherson will visit agricultural businesses in Schleswig-Holstein in the coming days to gain insights into climate-efficient management strategies.
Young people are also the focus of the “Kiel Scholarship” scholarship program, which offers four KSAEU students a scholarship to the CAU for the winter semester 2024/25 and summer semester 2025. The relationship between the two educational institutions has existed since March 2023, which formed the basis for this initiative. Further plans include a large aid transport, which is to take place in autumn 2024 in cooperation with the state capital Kiel, the state of Schleswig-Holstein and other actors. This transport includes humanitarian donations, as well as an ambulance and other urgently needed supplies, reports the German Cities Association.
Commitment of German universities
In this context, transnational education initiatives are becoming increasingly important. The Code of Conduct of the German Rectors' Conference (HRK) from 2013 sets minimum qualitative requirements for German university projects abroad in order to ensure academic and ethical criteria. Universities that voluntarily comply with this code position themselves as quality-conscious and interculturally sensitive partners in the global competition for attractive educational offerings. This is done by the platform for international university collaborations supports.
