Farewell to Dr. Streier: 20 years for the University of Vechta!
On September 15, 2025, the University Council of the University of Vechta said goodbye to Dr. Eva-Maria Streier after an impressive 20 years of membership. Her time on the University Council begins in 2005, at the inaugural meeting, and officially ends on September 30, 2025. During this time, she helped shape significant developments at the university, including the merger with the Catholic University of Applied Sciences and the renaming of the university to the University of Vechta.
On the occasion of the farewell, Christine Grimme, Chairwoman of the University Council, praised Streier's constructive exchange and expertise. Prof. Dr. Thomas Bals, the interim president, praised her commitment to education and science policy. Streier himself looked back gratefully on the past two decades and emphasized the relevance of the university's networking with the region.
Key events of the term
Dr. Eva-Maria Streier was not only a central part of the University Council, but also played an important role in two search committees for the selection of presidents. With her involvement, important projects were also realized such as the construction of a new lecture hall building and the expansion of the sports campus, during which the most modern sports hall in Lower Saxony was inaugurated.
With the end of Streier's term of office, the University Council welcomed a new member. Prof. Dr. Claudia Garnier, who has been a member since September 2025, brings valuable experience from her previous position as Professor of Pre-Modern History at the University of Vechta.

- Christine Grimme: Vorsitzende des Hochschulrats, gründete 2006 den Rotary Club Vechta und engagiert sich in mehreren allen Institutionen.
- Gerhard Tepe: Stellvertretender Vorsitzender, seit 2003 Direktor des Landes-Caritasverbandes für Oldenburg e.V.
- Lars Augath: Mitglied des Hochschulrats als Vertreter des Niedersächsischen Ministeriums für Wissenschaft und Kultur.
- Lothar Bluhm: Professor für Neuere deutsche Literaturwissenschaft, Mitglied seit 2022.
- Josef Lange: Vorsitzender des Hochschulrats seit Oktober 2019, auch ehemaliger Staatssekretär für Wissenschaft und Forschung.
- Claudia Garnier: Neuestes Mitglied und Professorin für Geschichte der Vormoderne.
This diverse composition of the University Council reflects not only the expertise but also the commitment of the members, who are actively committed to the further development of the University of Vechta.
Higher education policy in a broader context
The work of the University Council falls within a larger framework of higher education policy in Germany, which is characterized by initiatives such as the Higher Education Pact 2020 and its successor, the future contract “Strengthening Study and Teaching”.
