On September 17, 2025, Chemnitz University of Technology will present a new digital city tour that provides interesting insights into the history of the city. At 2 p.m., the web application, which was developed by the Professorship of Human Geography as part of European migration research, will be presented in the Office for Urban Development at Fürstenstrasse 23 (1st floor). The new platform focuses on two specific routes: “Textile Stories” and “Migration Stories”. These are intended to help users explore and make accessible previously often invisible stories about Chemnitz tu-chemnitz.de reported.
The application offers interactive experiences that allow you to explore different districts and their multimedia content. This digital city tour is based on an interactive district guide that has been created in collaboration with students since 2013 and was further developed with the involvement of students from Chemnitz schools until 2016.
Content development
The contents of “Textile Stories” and “Migration Stories” are the result of intensive research supported by excursions, interviews and archival research. In 2024, further content on the topics of the textile industry and migration was developed in collaboration with students from Chemnitz University of Technology. During the presentation, guests not only gain insights into the history of the application, but also have the opportunity to try out the web application live.

Digital expansions in the tourism sector
In parallel to this innovation, the Chemnitz Zwickau Region Tourism Association is planning. V. a series of digital offers to better address both locals and guests. Two digital tours are currently available in the online portal, which lead through Chemnitz city center and over the Kaßberg. The inner city tour with 17 stops over 4 kilometers is designed to cover important sights, while the Kaßberg tour has 11 stops over 6 kilometers and provides information about the Art Nouveau and Wilhelminian style districts.
