Concert enjoyment in Essen: Wagner's romanticism meets Bruckner!

On May 8, 2025, the Folkwang University of the Arts announces that guest conductor Johannes Klumpp will conduct two masterpieces of romantic music. These concerts, taking place on May 16 and 17, 2025, focus on connecting Wagner's legacy with the music of Anton Bruckner. Klumpp, who has been artistic director of the Heidelberg Symphony Orchestra since 2020/2021 and previously led the Folkwang Chamber Orchestra Essen, emphasizes the important role of Franz Schubert in Bruckner's work and the importance of working with young musicians.

The performances begin at 7:30 p.m. in the New Aula on the Essen-Werden campus. An introduction will take place in the Chamber Music Hall at 6:30 p.m. and offers free entry to the audience. The ticket prices for the concerts are set at 15.00 euros (reduced 8.00 euros) and are available via the Folkwang ticket hotline, by email or at the box office. Students who show a school ID enjoy free entry.

About the Folkwang SYMPHONY

The Folkwang SYMPHONY has existed since 1927 and is made up of students from all instrumental classes. The ensemble is dedicated to performing works from different stylistic periods and enables musicians to perform in public. Johannes Klumpp has worked with well-known orchestras throughout his career, including the MDR Symphony Orchestra and the Dresden Philharmonic.

Another aspect of musical support at Folkwang University can be seen in the “Cognito” concert series. This was launched in May 2019 and is aimed at the institution's young students. The aim is to identify and promote young musical talent in the Ruhr region at an early stage. The initiative focuses on the cultural diversity and artistic talents of the region.

As part of “Cognito”, young students have the opportunity to play regularly with professional orchestras, including the WDR Funkhausorchester and the Essen Philharmonic. The next concert in this series will take place on March 19, 2024 in Norderstedt and offers talented young musicians a platform to present their skills.

The role of the Unitel Music Foundation

Another important element in the promotion of art and culture is the Unitel Music Foundation based in Munich. This foundation, founded on August 22, 2016, aims to enrich the cultural landscape. The board, led by Dr. Reinhard Scolik and the board of trustees are working to ensure that art and culture are more firmly anchored in public life.

The Unitel Music Foundation maintains contacts with various organizations and supports artists in different phases of development. With this foundation, the founder Jan Mojto has created a platform that enables young talents to become visible and develop.

The numerous initiatives, both within Folkwang University and through organizations such as the Unitel Music Foundation, show how important it is to support young talent in music. They help keep cultural heritage alive and promote new generations of artists.
